On Wednesdays, we wear pink…Louis Vuitton bags, that is. As the Mean Girls musical spinoff takes to the theaters, we remember when the original Mean Girls stole our hearts upon its release in 2004. Featuring a then lesser known star-studded cast, including Lindsay Lohan, Amy Poehler, Tina Fey and Amanda Seyfried, the movie proves to be a 2000s cult and commercial classic.
The Y2K fashion and unparalleled style directed by costume designer Mary Jane Fort are extremely iconic and also stand the test of time as the style has circulated back into popularity. But something you may have missed is the amount of times Louis Vuitton is featured as a companion to Cady Heron (Lohan) and Regina George (Rachel McAdams).
Regina is first seen wearing the gorgeous pink pochette by Takashi Murakami. The pochette was a recurring accessory from Regina’s wardrobe, an iconic bag in pink featuring cherry blossoms and the Louis Vuitton monograms as part of a collaboration with Takashi Murakami in 2003.
Other than the Cherry Blossom, the pochette accessories exist in many variations, first released in 1992 to accompany larger bags and soaring to popularity for its size in the 1990s. Lately, it has again reached renewed popularity as it makes the rounds on fashionistas’ social media accounts.
The wardrobe designer thoughtfully paired each piece. Fort was inspired by one final, and unconventional, source: candy.
She recalled visiting New York during her research and going to a Dylan’s Candy Bar location, which was lined with sweet treats in a rainbow assortment of colors.
“That’s where I took my color palette,” Fort said. “I had visited in New York and was just overwhelmingly delighted with all the colors and all the sparkly, sugary things.”
The Plastics, who appear sweet on the surface but are the film’s villains, mirror the candy because they are meant to look enticing but can cause damage in the long run, Fort said.
Not only does Mean Girls cement style and fashion on screen in the 2000s, but it inspired the generations that came after to repurchase and re-purpose these gorgeous Louis Vuitton styles. You can pair the pink pochette with a matching pink LV belt like Regina George did, or simply make it your own. The choice is yours!
